Cristiano Marques (Captain)

Cris spent a three year spell in São Paulo playing for Corinthians (1995–98) before joining Cruzeiro. There he won his first cap for the national team, playing on 4 April 1999 against the USA in Brasilia (a match won 7–0 by Brazil). In 2000, the Brazilian magazine Placar named Cris as the leading player in his position during the Brazilian Championship, awarding him the Silver Ball title.

In 2002, he secured a transfer to Europe, moving to Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. However, this move did not prove successful as he struggled to adapt to his new surroundings both on and off the field. The following year saw him return to his native country, rejoining Cruzeiro as part of their Brazilian Championship winning team of that year.

In August 2004, he left Brazil once more, this time moving to Olympique Lyonnais for a transfer fee close to three million euros. Having been involved in a brawl during a match in June earlier that year Cris ran the risk of a six month suspension that the Brazilian Football Federation eventually decided not to extend to matches outside of Brazil. This affair, along with the physical duel he enjoyed with Thierry Henry during the France-Brazil international at the Stade de France on 20 May 2004 (a match that finished goalless), earned Cris the reputation of a rough, rugged defender.

After an unconvincing first spell in Europe Cris quickly imposed himself at the heart of Olympique Lyonnais' defense, proving himself an international class defender. His first season in Ligue 1 saw the club crowned league champions and Cris was selected in the Ligue 1 Players' team of the year. His second season was one of consolidation : Cris again had an excellent season with Lyon leaving no doubt as to his overall class. He was crowned "étoile d'or"" (Gold Star) by the magazine France Football. The newspaper L'Equipe considered him the best defender of the 2005–06 season and he was once more voted into the Ligue 1 team of the year by his fellow professionals. This excellent season earned him an upwardly revised salary as well as a one year extension to his contract, tying him to the French club until 2010."you can buy Netherlands world cup tickets and uefa europa league final tickets here.

Lyon on road to success

"With Lisandro, Lyon would certainly go through," said the coach who picked up the 1998 World Cup. "His role is phenomenal. He's an exceptional player." If Licha, who will be aided and abetted by the visionary Pjanic and the in-form Michel Bastos, is accused of picking and choosing when to turn it on, Bayern's fragile and often leaden-legged centre-back pairing of Daniel van Buyten and Martin Demichelis should be aware that a Champions League semi-final is likely to be the sort of stage upon which Lisandro flicks the on switch to overdrive.

Accusing Lisandro of being a big-game player only, though, is unfair as it seems that he is just one in a team of limelight-seeking divas. While they have sunk Liverpool, Real Madrid, Fiorentina and Bordeaux this season, Lyon have been brought down to earth themselves by the 'might' of Sochaux, Nice, Montpellier and Lorient. Even Grenoble, already relegated to Ligue 2 with the Easter eggs barely eaten, have taken points off OL, who only appear willing to stir themselves when a reward more glamourous than a mere three points is at stake.

"Lyon's strong point is that they can be playing badly and then, all of a sudden, they produce a fantastic game," explained the man Lisandro was bought to replace, current Real Madrid malingerer Karim Benzema. "It often happens when they play a major team - Lyon raise their game to their opponents' level or even beyond it. They suddenly surpass themselves on the pitch and that element explains how they produce so many top results against big teams."you can buy Netherlands world cup tickets and uefa europa league final tickets here.

Up against Germany's greatest team, with four European Cups in a bulging trophy cabinet, and the eyes of European football turned upon them, Lyon will surely decide they can lift more than a finger in Munich.

Hugo Lloris

Hugo Lloris (born 26 December 1986 in Nice) is a French football player who currently plays as a goalkeeper for Olympique Lyonnais in Ligue 1. He is also a French international and is currently the first-choice goalkeeper for both club and country. Lloris previously played for hometown club OGC Nice making his debut as a teenager in October 2005. After excelling at the club for three years, in 2008, Lloris moved to seven-time champions Olympique Lyonnais. He is the reigning Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year.

Hugo began his football career playing at CEDAC (Centre de Diffusion et d’Action Culturelle), a local cultural center based in the commune of Cimiez located on the outskirts of Nice. The center offered a variety of activities, which included football. Lloris excelled at the center and caught the attention of former OGC Nice goalkeeper Dominique Baratelli, who recommended that the player join his former club. At the age of 10, Lloris joined Nice's youth academy.

After spending nearly three years in the reserves, he was promoted to the first team squad and was handed the number 1 kit. He was designated by manager Frédéric Antonetti as the starting goalkeeper for the club's Coupe de la Ligue season ahead of fan-favorite and Nice-born as well Damien Gregorini, who was relied more upon in league play.

Fleury Di Nallo

The club's all-time leading scorer is Fleury Di Nallo, who scored 182 goals while at the club from 1960 to 1974. Di Nallo is also third behind Chiesa and Coupet in all time appearances having played in 489 matches during his 14-year stint at the club. Despite Di Nallo's impressive goalscoring record, he doesn't hold the record for most goals scored during a league season. That distinction goes to Bourg-en-Bresse-born André Guy who notched 25 goals, which he attained during the 1968–69 season.

Lyon's biggest victory is 10–0, which occurred of two occasions against Ajaccio in the 1953–54 edition of the Coupe de France and, two seasons later, against Delle in the 1955–56 edition of the competition. Lyon's biggest league victory is 7–0 and also occurred on two occasions. The first being during the 1966–67 season against Angers and the second being against Marseille during the 1997–98 season. The club's biggest victory on the European stage occurred during the 1974–75 season. Lyon hammered Luxembourg-based club FA Red Boys Differdange 7–0.

Corinthians

Anderson started playing professional football for Corinthians, one of São Paulo's major football clubs. He played at the team for five consecutive seasons, moving to Portugal in the middle of his 6th season. At Corinthians, Anderson conquered the First FIFA World Club Championship (2000) a Brazilian Championship title (in 2005), the Brazilian Cup (in 2002), the São Paulo State Championship (in 2001 and 2003) and the Rio-São Paulo Tournament (in 2002).

SL Benfica

Anderson was brought to SL Benfica at the beginning of the 2005/2006 season. He played the whole 90 minutes for SL Benfica in the team's first Portuguese Superliga match of the season, against Académica in Coimbra, on August 20, 2005. He quickly gained his place in the team's starting eleven, with Ronald Koeman (at the time managing the Portuguese side) playing him in the center of the defense, alongside Brazilian team mate Luisão. So far, Anderson has won only one tournament for Benfica: the Portuguese Supercup (in 2005/2006).

Managers

Olympique Lyonnais has had 22 permanent managers and two caretaker managers since the club's first appointed Oscar Heisserer as a professional manager in 1950. Heisserer also served as the first player-coach of the club, coming out of retirement to play during his final season at the club. The longest-serving manager in terms of time was Aimé Mignot, who managed Lyon for 8 years from 1968 to 1976. Alain Perrin, who managed the club from 2007–2008, was the first Lyon manager to achieve the double.

Minor sponsors of the club include LG, APICIL, and MDA Électroménager. During Coupe de France matches, the club wear kits sponsored by SFR, Caisse d'Épargne, and Pitch as they are main sponsors of the French Football Federation. During Coupe de la Ligue matches, Lyon wear shirts with the Speedy Triangle logo on the front as they are main sponsors of the LFP.

Ownership and finances

Olympique Lyonnais is owned by Rhône businessman Jean-Michel Aulas, who acquired the club on 15 June 1987. He serves as the founder and chief operating officer of CEGID (Compagnie Européenne de Gestion par l'Informatique Décentralisée). After riddling the club of its debt, Aulas restructured the club's management and reorganized the finances and, in a span of two decades, transformed the club from a second division team into one of the richest football clubs in the world. However, Aulas has been lambasted for, according to critics, running the club as if it were a business. The club currently operates on the European Stock Exchange under the name OL Groupe, initialed OLG.

In April 2008, business magazine Forbes ranked Lyon as the thirteenth most valuable football team in the world. The magazine valued the club at $408 million (€275.6m), excluding debt. On 12 February 2009, accountants Deloitte released their annual Deloitte Football Money League. In the report, Lyon were rated in the twelfth spot, reportedly bringing in an annual revenue of €155.7 million for the 2007–08 season, which ranks among the world's best football clubs in terms of revenue.

Aulas currently serves on the board for the European Club Association, a sports organization representing football clubs in Europe. He was also the last president of the now-defunct G-14 organization.

Start of the new millennium,

At the start of the new millennium, Olympique Lyonnais began to achieve unlimited success in French football. During this time, the club established themselves as the premiere club in France upending the likes of Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain and also becoming the country's richest club and one of the most popular. Lyon became known for developing promising talent, who would not only achieve greatness in France, but also abroad and internationally. Notable examples include Michael Essien, Florent Malouda, Juninho Pernambucano, Cris, Éric Abidal, Mahamadou Diarra, Patrick Müller, and Karim Benzema, to name a few.

Lyon won their first ever Ligue 1 championship in 2002, starting a national record-breaking streak of seven successive titles. During that span, the club also won one Coupe de France title, their first Coupe de la Ligue title, and a record six Trophée des Champions. The club also performed well in UEFA competition reaching as far as the quarter-finals on three occasions in the UEFA Champions League. Lyon's streak and consistent dominance of French football came to an end during the 2008–09 season, when they were dethroned of their league title by Bordeaux.

Success in 60s and 70s

Olympique Lyonnais enjoyed limited success in the 60s, partly due to the play of strike force Fleury Di Nallo, known as The Little Prince of Gerland and arguably Lyon's greatest player ever, and the Argentine Nestor Combin. Under the guidance of manager Lucien Jasseron, the club achieved their highest first division finish, at the time, finishing in 5th place. The successful season culminated into the club reaching the 1963 edition of the Coupe de France final, where they faced Monaco. Lyon secured a 0–0 draw in the first match, but lost the replay 0–2. The following season, the club captured their first-ever Coupe de France title defeating Bordeaux 2–0. The club also finished in 4th position in the league. The 1964–65 season saw the departure of Combin to Italian club Juventus. Due to this, the team suffered from his absence, finishing in a respectable 6th position in the league, but suffering elimination in the early rounds of both the Coupe de France and the UEFA Cup Winner's Cup.

Mignot first season was mostly timid as the club finished a modest 9th in the league and were eliminated in the Round of 16 in the Coupe de France. This inconsistent season was primarily due to Di Nallo breaking his leg in just the fourth match of the season. Despite a healthy Di Nallo returning for the 1969–70 season, Lyon still suffered, finishing 15th.

The following two seasons over, Lyon finished 3rd with Lacombe and Chiesa leading the way. The next season, despite getting off to a strong start in the league, Lyon struggled fighting relegation for most of the season. Due to this, halfway through the season, Mignot resigned and made way for Aimé Jacquet, who served in a player-coach role for the rest of the season. The coaching change successfully changed the club's focus and Lyon eventually finished in 16th position. Jacquet also led the club to the Coupe de France final where they lost to Marseille 0–2.

Troupel for Lyon

Troupel joined the club midway through the season, where Lyon ultimately finished in 12th position. Despite the inconsistent start, Troupel developed a squad full of talent, which included savvy veterans like Swiss international Jacques Fatton and Antoine Dalla Cieca, and young emerging talent in Jean Djorkaeff, Marcel Le Borgne, and Bernard Gardon.

The team responded the following season finishing in the top half of the table and also reaching the semi-finals of the Coupe de France. Over the next three years (1956–1959), Lyon finished mid-table. In 1959, Troupel was replaced as manager by Gaby Robert. The arrival of a new manager included the arrival of an influx of new players with the Argentine Nestor Combin, Cameroonian striker Eugène N'Jo Léa, and Frenchman Jules Sbroglia being the biggest signings. Despite the signings, Lyon still struggled finishing in 16th position for the 1959–60 season.

The Begginings

On 3 August 1950, Louot's plan came to fruition when Olympique Lyonnais was officially founded by Dr. Albert Trillat and numerous others. Due to the split, Lyon moved into the Stade de Gerland, a stadium designed by local architect Tony Garnier. The club's first manager was Oscar Heisserer and on 26 August, played its first official match defeating CA Paris-Charenton 3–0 in front of 3,000 supporters. In 1951, the club was crowned champions of the second division, thus moving up to the first division. Lyon were relegated back to the second division after just one season, despite Heisserer coming out of retirement as a player. Lyon spent the next two seasons in Division 2 building for the future by signing players such as Åke Hjalmarsson and Erik Kuld Jensen. Eventually, during the 1953–1954 season, the club achieved promotion back to the first division under the leadership of Heisserer, who departed the club after a four-year stint as manager. He was replaced by Julien Darui, who only managed the club in the first division for six months, before leaving his post. Lucien Troupel replaced him.

The making of the Club

Olympique Lyonnais was, initially, formed under the multisports club Lyon Olympique Universitaire, who was originally formed in 1896 as Racing Club de Lyon. In 1899, Lyon Olympique formed a football section. In the early years of the club, the football section was often overshadowed by local rivals FC Lyon, who won the French championship in the both the 1908 and 1909 seasons. Both LOU and FC Lyon also shared rivalries with local clubs CS Terreaux and AS Lyonnaise. In 1910, Lyon Olympique won the French Championship eclipsing their rivals. By 1917, the city of Lyon was divided with its citizens supporting only one of the four clubs.

By 1945, Lyon Olympique were managed by Félix Louot, who provided the leadership, determination, and faith in order to create professional football in the city of Lyon. His principles helped the club win the southern pool of the final wartime championship by two points over Bordeaux. In the national final, which pitted them against Rouen, Lyon Olympique lost the match 0–4. These successes propelled the club to the first division, but also led to problems regarding the cohabitation of amateurs and professionals within Lyon Olympique Universitaire. Due to numerous disagreements, Louot and his entourage began to contemplate forming their own club.
